    I’m just echoing what Simmons asked. This plugin would be perfect for me if I can add, delete, or edit the fields. For example, I want to remove the email required and make it optional. I also want to be able to add children, or birthday, etc.

  9. Great Plug-in, I’m using it for a clients site right now and it looks and works great! Wondering if you could answer a few questions:

    1) Right now only Admin’s can edit/manage contacts. How do I make so I can make this available to Editors? When I hand this off to my client I won’t be giving them an Admin login (for there own good), but they’ll need to be able to manage the contacts.

    2) How can I add more fields? Such as a description or perhaps a photo?

    3) I’ve noticed that not matter where I put the [contactdir_directory] on my page it always goes on top and all text goes below it. What if I want some text above the directory? How do I get it to go above it.

    4) I’ve noticed you have a CSV importer which is fantastic, is it possible to have a link for users to be able to download CSV’s of the contact?

    5) If users search for a name and there are no results, is it possible to add a “You Search Returned No Results” kindof text?

    6) It’d be nice if we could sort by Category in the backend.

    7) Any chance of having any widgets that go along with this plugin? Perhaps Categories?

    Anyway, great plugin, if we could get some answers to these I’ll for sure be donating.

  12. Love your plugin!

    So On my page in WP, I have a header image and I then insert the “[contactdir_directory]” code after the image is posted, but for some reason, the Plugin always shows on top of the image. Is there a way I can post the header jpg image above the directory? THANKS IN ADVANCE!

  14. Great plugin but it appears that the CSV importer isn’t working correctly. My CSV file is set up according to your example, but all the fields import as one line into the Name field… strange…

    • It cause by version of CSV. In office 2003 use , for separate the field but 2007 use ; to separate the field.

      But dont worry I’ve tag new version of this plugin, and in this version you can choose the csv style (2007 or 2003).

    • Hi Ahlul. Unfortunately it appears there’s still a problem. In my test import file I’ve used “,” then “;” then nothing at all in the address field to separate the various parts of the address, but in both cases the following error appears on import:

      Warning: fgetcsv() [function.fgetcsv]: delimiter must be a character in /var/www/vhosts/mysite.com/httpdocs/wp-content/plugins/wp-contacts-directory/contact-directory.php on line 881

      I’m using Excel 2007 and WordPress 2.9.2.

  16. Hi. Love your plugin. Upgraded to 3.0 and all my category connections are no longer displayed. Checked database and it is there but nothing shows up for a contact’s category either in the listing or the backend.

    Any Ideas?

    • Also during the activation of the plugin I received these two errors. I’m running WP 2.9.2:

    • Thanks for the quick reply. I ran update=1 and now the categories are showing in WP backend, but they are not showing on the page that uses the [contactdir_directory] shortcode. I am no longer receiving any PHP/SQL errors.

    • I am having the same problem, have ran the update and categories showing in backend but not on main site. If a user tries to browse by category nothing is shown.
      Any thoughts?

    Nice and very useful plugin, simple clear code.Thank you for it!
    Unfortunately, I can’t donate you due to I’m also an un-donated developer (but newbie on wp field:)

    Only an improvement suggestion here for a possible future version:
    Can you provide custom fields on Contact dir management on admin or would the CSV import be extended ( for example importing all fields from Thunderbird More Function AddressBook which can export either , or ; separated CSV)?

    I can see, all of above requires modifying your tables added to the wordpress database to extend the imported or custom given additional fields, and for example in case of Thunderbird importing that would be tricky somehow synchronizing the categories also contained in the exported CSV.

    If you see fancy in the written idea, really it’d be nice giving this improvement in the future version of your plugin. (Owing to there is not else so simple even combined address book plugin which maintain CSV import. Either there is which can import a CSV from outlook, but that makes posts from the imported contacts (not so good idea as per my concern) or there is a simple address book which is not able to export/import.)

    Hi I am using version 3.0.1 of your plugin on WP 2.9.2; these are my findings: 1) Category does not display in contact details through %category% usage in template 2) Pressing the “All” option in the alphabetical bar, throws back to the blog home page instead of listing all contacts 3) Search issues when checking a category and leaving search field blank; this does not return any contacts in that category 4) Plugin occurs twice in the plugin admin screen 5) Regarding your question; I would recommend to have 1 category and multiple tags per contact which is more in line with WP.     I also would like the option of a drop down category selector.

    Category search does not work. It only remembers the last entries category?? or maybe its only the last category it can search by.

    the plugin does not work properly should manage contacts separately for each site.

    A great feature is to put the dynamic fields but I think it is very complex to implement.

    This is really a great plugin and easy to use. Only thing that bugs me is that the categories appears in the order that you add them. Is it possible to sort them automatically so that they appear alphabetically, it will look much neater and make it easier to use.

    I also think it will be better to have the categories as a drop down list on the page where you add entries for the person to select rather than a tick box. On the display page it is OK to show all the categories but they should be sorted alphabetically.

    You’ll see on my site I use the plugin to build a business directory, for which it is good and will be great with the abobe enhancements. I’m sure these changes will also make sense in other applications.

  45. How about an if/else statement for something like the url so we aren’t left with empty lines above and below the filled out data.

    something like if %url% =! empty { %url& } else { do nothing with this value and hide the line }

  47. This is a great plugin but for some reason although within the admin Contacts dir. I can see that categories have been stored, they are not showing on the display directory page, nor or they working when a user selects to display on certain categories.

    For instance I know I have several contacts in the category ‘south east’, and I can see that the category is stored against that record in the admin area, but when I select that category on the directory display page then no contacts are returned.

    Am I doing something wrong, or does this aspect of the plugin not work?

  51. pretty good plugin. i’m actually not necessarily using it for personal contacts, but as a directory of schools.

    something that would be great to have are categories within categories (parent/child) relationship … THEN … have the ability to organize the category lists alphabetically, while separated by each parent category.

  53. Hey, the Contacts Directory plugin is working great for me. The only problem is we would like the url field in the contacts go to a website outside of ours. Like, if we had http://www.irs.gov, we’d like it to go to the irs.gov website not within our directory. I know this much be an easy change. Easy suggestions. Please advise.

  71. If you search just by category (the checkbox), your result will only yield the last value. The following code change in contact-directory.php should be done to fix this bug:

    On line 515, you need to move the temp array declaration:

    $tmparray = array();

    It should be placed just above the for loop so the entire if statement now looks like:

    The old one was passing across a null variable so would never display any categories at all. The edit I have done gets the allocated ID’s of each search result, calls the function to fetch its name and concatenate it into a string called $cat_name. This string is then eventually displayed on screen in the search results.

  73. ONe edit to the above, to correct the comma coming infront of the 1st category in my above edit, replace the $cat_name assignment with this one:

    $cat_name = $cat_name.contactdir_info($tid)->name.’ , ‘;

    This will ensure a comma will only come AFTER each category :-)

    It has to do with the font that is used on this blog. The ” and ‘ are causing the errors when copied and pasted from your comments.

    I replaced those and it now works perfectly.

    Now if we could show a profile picture with the directory listing this would be one sweet directory plugin

    This error code is found on my dashboard. There is another error code that comes up repeatedly with the search function on my links page.

    I think those errors are not *directly* related to the plugin. They sound like an issue with your webhost/server setup/restrictions – PHP is trying to get an outgoing connection to a file. The plugin is checking to see if a new updated file exists or something similar to that nature.

    Perhaps you could try editing the code to forcibly prevent that section of code from running. To do this, edit the contact-directory.php file (make sure you have a backup incase the edit has messes things up) and for everywhere you see:

    function_exists(“file_get_contents”)

    try replacing it with:

    function_exists(“file_get_contents_abc”)

    Note: only 2 occurrences are in the file.

    Since the function “file_get_contents_abc” will not exist, it should not call the function to go out and fetch anything. Hopefully that should work, if not revert back to the backup version you made.

  81. I cannot filter alphabetically. I have 36 contacts and when I click on a letter it reloads the page and all 36 contacts are still displayed. I haven’t edited the plugin in anyway. This is also happening with the Search box and the category checkboxes. Any suggestions? Many thanks. (Great plugin!)

  84. Hey, added the extra fields by adding the fields in the contact directory.php file. had to change some 30 instances , got to be a little careful, but serves the purpose.

  88. Is there a way to filter the results of the Contacts Directory in wordpress by the user-defined categories?

    For example, I used your plug-in to create a contacts directory on my website, where I have set up the categories as locations/countries, e.g. categories = Canada, Hong Kong, etc. By default the plug-in lists the categories on the page as tickboxes connected to the search function. However, I would love to be able to use the categories as FILTERS, so that a user selects a category, say Canada, from a dropdown box and it filters the contacts list so that only contacts from Canada appear. Is this possible? How do I do it?

    I like your contacts directory, nice and simple but it would be useful to be able to edit contacts from the front end and also link from directory to add new contact. I would also like to be able to filter directory by category. Keep up the good work.

  99. I think you have a security whole in WP Contacts Directory. I’ve been running it for over a month now and I keep getting links added to my posts for stuff like viagra. Evidence so far is pointing to your plugin so far. Just thought you should know.

  100. Is there a way to add users to the Contact Dir for approval, automatically after their profile is completed? If not, does that mean I have to duplication the info they input?

    I’ve just started using your plugin WP Contacts Directory and I’m loving it! I spent a lot of time going through various plugins and this is by far the best. Thank you! :)
    Of course, there are always some features you wish the product had, and here are my questions/wishlist:

    1. I can’t get the categories to show when I use [contactdir_directory]. The field “Posted in category:” is blank for all contacts. Any way I can solve this?

    2. Is there a way to remove/change some titles? For example, I don’t use “Website”, but I would like a title called “Phone 2″.

    3. Is there a way to get clickable categories so I can see all the contacts in that specific category? Both in the admin area and when I have put [contactdir_directory].

    I really appreciate that you made this plugin!

  107. 1) Bug: Posted in category: (categories don’t show up here).
    2) A drop down sortable category menu (with sub categories) would be nice.
    3) Ability to add or delete fields would also be nice.

    1 custom fields to enter own titles & fields
    2 definately need “cell phone” or “phone 2″
    3 widget for displaying directory in sidebar, maybe by category

  109. I don’t need phone and addresss, so I’ve taken those out, but what I do need is custom fields for a profile / short description and a URL. Possibly the option of twitter u/n & facebook page, etc. Custom fields would mean you can customise however though.

    I like it with checkboxes because I’m working with more than one category, but if I select more than one category it pulls the same entry up twice, which is incredibly buggy.

    It’s not really useable for me without these issues fixed, but it’s the closet I’ve found to what we need on our website.
